Do you think about food all the time?

Eating_Disorder_0.jpg

Does it feel like more and more of your time, energy, and mental space is being taken up by your thoughts about food? Or maybe it feels like you’re constantly worried about what other people think about you. You feel self-conscious about everything - how much you eat, how you look in pictures, if you’re smart enough, attractive enough, worthy enough.

It feels impossible to feel good about yourself. In fact, you might even have a hard time remembering the last time you felt truly comfortable in your body - or truly proud of yourself as a person.

You might notice that it is increasingly difficult to separate your own voice from the voice of your self-criticism. That critical voice has become the dominant dialogue in your mind - and it never misses an opportunity to point out your mistakes.

You’re starting to notice that your insecurities are impacting every area of your life…

  • You spend too much time trying to control your appearance - You get stuck looking at yourself in the mirror, you change your clothes repeatedly before deciding on an outfit, and the enjoyment of your day hinges entirely on what number pops up on your scale.

  • Your body is suffering - You’re either too hot or too cold. Your stomach often hurts or feels nauseous. Your hair might look dull and thin. You’re not sleeping well and you wake up feeling tired and miserable.

  • You are overwhelmed with constant feelings of shame - Shame for eating too much. Shame for not exercising enough. Shame for not being productive. Shame for having problems with food in the first place.

therapy for eating disorders can help

It may feel impossible now, but you can stop feeling guilty about food. You can feel comfortable in your body. You can live free from anxiety & shame.

Therapy for eating disorders will help you:

  1. Learn the techniques and coping skills you need to reduce stress, ease your anxiety, and quiet the ever present voice of your self-criticism.

  2. Heal your body and develop a healthy relationship with food and exercise through intuitive eating.

  3. Feel comfortable in and appreciate your body so that you can look in the mirror and feel content, instead of disgusted.

We will help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. Our approach to eating disorder therapy comes from a place of hope and compassion: that you can fully recover from your eating disorder and enjoy a fulfilling and happy life.

Eating Disorder Signs & Symptoms

Restriction

Limiting your food intake for the purpose of weight loss, control, or emotional avoidance. This can include fasting, skipping meals, eating small portions, or eliminating food groups/types of food from your diet.

Compulsive Exercise

Feeling like you “have” to exercise or else you risk feeling unbearably anxious, uncomfortable in your body, and worried about your weight. Can be any type of movement, including walking and pacing.

Purging

Any behavior that is completed for the purpose of negating the calories you’ve consumed. Can include vomiting, laxative use, exercise, and more. Can occur after overeating or restriction.

Orthorexia

Preoccupation with healthy or “clean” eating to the point that eating “unhealthy” foods causes noticeable distress. Often includes the elimination of certain food groups or types of food.

Emotional Eating

Eating, often past the point of fullness, for the purpose of emotional comfort, distraction, “numbing out,” and stress management. Sometimes this is called stress eating.

Binge Eating

Eating a much larger quantity of food in one sitting than most people would typically consume. You often feel out of control during the binge and can experience significant shame and physical discomfort afterward.

Eating Disorder Therapy FAQ

  • In our first session, we will do a full assessment of the problems and challenges you want to solve. We will discuss your relationship with food and body image, as well as your mood and current life stressors. This is our time to set goals and formulate a game plan. Follow-up sessions are our time to work toward the goals we set in your initial consult. This is where you learn coping skills, process your feelings, and get support.

  • Your first appointment costs $195, and follow-up appointments cost $160. Check out our main FAQ page to learn more about why we are out-of-network providers.

  • Yes, we work with all genders ages 14 and older. Whether you are a high school student, young adult, or experienced professional, it’s possible to start treatment for your eating disorder at any age.

  • We hear this from parents all the time! In many cases, adolescents struggle to connect with therapists when that provider isn’t an adolescent specialist. When your teenager finally meets the therapist they feel fully comfortable with, they’re a lot more receptive to therapy. We love working with adolescents at Live Mindfully, and have treated hundreds of teenagers for disordered eating, body image, and anxiety.

  • You can message us here to arrange a free consultation. This consult takes 15 minutes and is done over the phone with our client coordinator who can answer any questions you have about working with us. After your questions are answered, we can find a session time that works well with your schedule and get you started on the road to your recovery.
