Specialized Therapy Services in Houston

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety therapy in Houston, TX at Live Mindfully Psychotherapy goes beyond generic stress management techniques. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I help you develop a different relationship with anxious thoughts and feelings. Instead of trying to eliminate anxiety—which often doesn't work—you'll learn to acknowledge it without letting it dictate your decisions. We'll work on identifying your values and taking action aligned with those values, even when anxiety is present. This approach is particularly effective for women who feel like anxiety has been running their lives, making it hard to make decisions, enjoy relationships, or feel confident in their daily activities.

Therapy for Perfectionism

Perfectionism isn't about having high standards—it's about the exhausting internal pressure, harsh self-criticism, and fear of failure that keeps you stuck. In therapy for perfectionism, we explore how perfectionism developed, what purpose it's serving, and how it's actually holding you back from the life you want. You'll learn to separate your worth from your achievements, develop self-compassion, and recognize that you can be successful and driven without the constant anxiety and self-criticism that perfectionism brings. Many women I work with discover that perfectionism has been masking deeper issues like anxiety, trauma, or OCD that need direct attention.

OCD Therapy

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder requires specialized treatment approaches that many general therapists aren't trained in. I offer evidence-based OCD therapy using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT). ERP involves gradually exposing yourself to the thoughts, situations, or objects that trigger your obsessions while learning to resist the compulsions that usually follow. I-CBT focuses on the reasoning processes that maintain obsessional doubt, which can be particularly helpful for contamination fears, responsibility concerns, or other themes where doubt plays a central role. Together, we'll create a treatment plan that addresses your specific obsessions and compulsions at a pace that feels manageable for you.

OCD Intensives

For those ready to make significant progress quickly, OCD Intensives provide concentrated treatment over several hours or days instead of spreading sessions across many months. During an intensive, we create a customized treatment plan based on your specific obsessions and compulsions, develop an exposure hierarchy, and engage in guided exposure work that allows for deeper progress in a condensed timeframe. This format is especially valuable if you've been struggling with OCD for a long time and want a more immersive approach, or if you're ready to dedicate focused time to breaking free from OCD's grip on your life.

Eating Disorder Therapy

Eating disorders involve much more than food and weight—they're often about control, perfectionism, anxiety, trauma, and identity. I provide specialized eating disorder therapy that addresses your unique relationship with food, exercise, and your body while exploring the underlying thoughts, emotions, and experiences that contribute to disordered eating patterns. Using ACT and other evidence-based approaches, we'll work on developing psychological flexibility rather than rigid rules about food and exercise. Many women I work with have eating disorders that co-occur with anxiety, OCD, or trauma, and treatment addresses all of these issues simultaneously, recognizing how they intersect and influence each other.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma affects people in different ways and can involve obvious events like accidents or assault, or more subtle experiences like growing up in an environment where you never felt safe or valued. In trauma therapy, we work to help you process these experiences in a way that reduces their emotional intensity and helps you develop more adaptive perspectives about yourself and your past. Many women don't initially identify themselves as having trauma, but they recognize patterns—difficulty trusting others, relationships that mirror unhealthy family dynamics, or strong reactions that seem disproportionate to current situations. These can all be signs that unresolved trauma is affecting your present life, and trauma therapy can help you heal and move forward.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy specifically designed for trauma processing. EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories in a way that allows for healing without requiring you to talk in detail about every traumatic experience. The process involves several phases, starting with history-taking and preparation, moving through desensitization and reprocessing of traumatic memories, and concluding with installation of positive beliefs. Throughout this process, you remain in control and work at a pace that feels manageable for you. EMDR can be particularly effective for processing single-incident traumas, complex trauma, or traumatic experiences that continue to create distressing symptoms in your daily life.

EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives offer concentrated trauma processing over longer sessions rather than spreading the work across many months of weekly therapy. This format is particularly valuable if you're dealing with a specific traumatic event, have limited time for extended weekly therapy, or have found that weekly sessions don't provide enough continuity for deep processing work. During the planning session, we'll thoroughly review your trauma history, discuss your current symptoms and goals, and work through a customized intensive workbook. I'll teach and review several coping skills for you to practice in preparation for the intensive. The intensive itself involves extended EMDR processing sessions where we can make significant progress in a concentrated timeframe, allowing for deeper healing work.

Therapy for Athletes

Athletes face unique mental health challenges that require specialized understanding. The culture of athletics often normalizes pushing through pain, maintaining strict control over your body, and tying your identity closely to performance. In therapy for athletes, we address these specific challenges while honoring your love of movement and sport. This might involve working through perfectionism that makes it hard to enjoy competing, processing traumatic experiences in your athletic history such as abusive coaching or significant injuries, treating an eating disorder while helping you maintain the strength and energy needed for your activities, or managing performance anxiety. It's not about giving up athletics—it's about developing a healthier relationship with your body and your sport so you can continue doing what you love without sacrificing your mental health.

Virtual Group Therapy for Women

Group therapy creates a space where you can connect with other women who understand what you're going through, learn from each other's experiences, and practice new skills in a supportive environment. This can be particularly powerful for reducing the isolation that often comes with anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, or perfectionism. In a group setting, you'll discover that you're not alone in your struggles and gain insight from hearing how others navigate similar challenges.

Why Choose Specialized Virtual Therapy in Houston

Houston's sprawling metro area can make accessing specialized care challenging. Virtual therapy eliminates commute time and geographic barriers, allowing you to work with a therapist whose expertise aligns with your specific needs, regardless of where you're located in the Houston area—whether that's the Heights, Montrose, West University, the Galleria area, or anywhere else.

Many women find it easier to be vulnerable and open when they're in their own comfortable space rather than in an office. Research shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for most conditions, with the same dedicated attention, the same specialized treatment approaches, and the same commitment to your progress.

What to Expect: Your First Appointment

During your first therapy appointment, we'll focus on understanding your story. What brought you to therapy now? What have you tried before, and how did it work or not work for you? What are your goals for counseling, and what would meaningful progress look like to you?

If appropriate, we might use specific assessment tools to better understand your symptoms, such as the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) for OCD assessment. Based on this understanding, I'll suggest a treatment plan tailored specifically to your goals and symptoms. We'll discuss whether this approach makes sense for you and adjust as needed.

Building rapport and making sure you feel understood and safe is just as important as the therapeutic techniques we use. These initial sessions are about creating a foundation for the work ahead.

For EMDR Intensives, the planning session is more in-depth and lasts 90 minutes. We'll thoroughly review your trauma history, discuss your current symptoms and goals, and work through a customized intensive workbook. I'll teach and review several coping skills for you to practice in preparation for the intensive.

Ongoing Investment in Your Care

Once care is established, you can expect my ongoing investment in your treatment. I'm available via email to all my clients for questions or concerns between sessions. We'll reassess your treatment plan and goals every few months to make sure we're making the progress you're hoping for.

If at any time we're not making progress toward your goals, or if your goals shift, we'll address that openly and adjust our approach. Therapy should be a collaborative process where you feel heard and where the work we're doing continues to align with what matters most to you.

Additional Services: Supervision for LPCs & CEDS

I also provide supervision for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS) who are seeking to develop their skills in treating anxiety, OCD, trauma, and eating disorders.
